According to the series’ official Twitter account, a new Higurashi animated project is in the works for 2013 — lead by director Kawase Toshifumi. The announcement was first made at the Higurashi 10th Anniversary Fan Meeting event held in Tokyo Dome City this weekend.

The new work is entitled, 「Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku」. The plot will be based off Ryukishi07’s short story, “Higurashi Outbreak” — which was included with the original soundtrack for the 2006 PC doujin game, 「Higurashi Daybreak」. The format — whether TV, OVA, or film — has yet to be revealed.

[UPDATE 12.15.2012] – It will be an animated film set to debut next Spring.

“Higurashi Outbreak” is set in the same Hinamizawa village of the previous stories. The village has been completely sealed off due to a mysterious virus in 1983, and Maebara Keiichi and Ryūgū Rena deal with the outbreak.

  1. Well, it only has 2 real seasons, but…  If this has a serious tone, I’ll be really pleased.  If it has a noncanonical, lighthearted tone, Ill also be pleased.  However, I do hope for the Higurashi of old.
